One year after our first trip as a couple, we headed back to Portsmouth to drink our way through my favorite New Hampshire city.

We started our day with a stop at Deciduous Brewing in Newmarket. This was our first time visiting, but Deciduous has quickly become our favorite New Hampshire brewery. Their tap room is simple and cozy, featuring a fireplace and comfy seating. Deciduous specializes in lower alcohol content brews, like lambics, Berliner Weisse, and goses.

We chatted with co-owner and brewer, Frank Zagimi while we sampled their offerings.

Luster – 4.2% Berliner Weisse
Arose – 4.8% American Pale Ale. We grabbed a growler to take home.
Auroral with mango and lychee – 4% Berliner Weisse
Dimorphic – 8% Imperial IPA
Renascence – 8.1% American Porter.
Aggregration – 2.4% Gose
Tillage – 6.8% Belgian IPA

After checking in, we drove over to WHYM (Water. Hops. Yeast. Malt) beer cafe, located on route 1. It’s a bit outside of dowtown Portsmouth, but well worth the quick drive. Their amazing selection of craft brews, meads and ciders made it difficult to choose just one. So we didn’t. We grabbed a couple local favorites and sampled Founders Nitro Rubaeus before heading back into town. I’m not usually a fan of fruity beer, but it was fantastic. The Nitro made for a light, almost whipped cream-like head.

We can’t visit the coast without enjoying some oysters, so Franklin Oyster House was the perfect choice for dinner. With such an impressive variety of west and east coast oysters, we just couldn’t choose and went with a split from both coasts, as recommended by the friendly and knowledgeable staff.

From start to finish (I highly recommend the Pineapple Celebration for dessert), Franklin Oyster House delivered an amazing dining experience.

Walking back to the hotel, I had to stop to take this shot of State Street.

Before heading home the next day, we stopped for breakfast and bloodies at The Friendly Toast. Eclectic and fun atmosphere, huge menu, and an amazing breakfast. Just what I needed. In my slightly hungover fog, I quickly ordered their standard bloody mary and  missed out on the Bay of Pigs – bacon vodka, house made bloody mix, bacon, and an Old Bay seasoned rim. Sad face. Next time…
